What is uTorrent?

Today you practically can’t find an Internet user who has never come across such things as torrent and tracker. uTorrent free client remains the most popular one among users. It is supported by Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and is compatible with such portable devices as iPhone, Android, iPad. According to statistics this client along with BitTorrent is being used by 100 million users a month in 2011.


Program features

uTorrent  is software for sharing information between users via trackers (sites) owned by BitTorrent, Inc. It is known for high speed of performance due to its small size and rather impressive functionality.


uTorrent 3.1 Interface

 


At the beginning uTorrent was devised as a lightweight client with minimum features. The client is written on C++ programming language and requires minimum RAM (nearly 320 Kb) and has the following features:


1.    Support for a wide variety of operating systems (all Windows versions, Windows Vista).
2.    Localized for over 50 languages.
3.    Possibility to adjust program interface settings.
4.    Support for remote access to uTorrent.
5.    Initial seeding of torrents.
6.    Possibility to limit maximal upload speed.
7.    Possibility to limit download speed.
8.    Support for proxy server.
9.    Drag-and-drop technology allowing to sent files very quickly.
10.    HTTPS and UDP tracker support.


To date there are about 30 uTorrent versions some of them being available only under Windows 2000 under higher versions. uTorrent 3.1 also allows to share files directly without a tracker.


uTorrent beta version for Mac OS X  is characterized by possibility to perform multiple downloads, peer exchange, filesharing without a tracker and easy settings.
Also there is a uTorrent alpha version for Linux which has the following key features:


•    Trackless sharing
•    Multiple downloads
•    Resuming paused downloads
•    Torrent peed limiting
•    Bandwidth configuration.


uTorrent is also known as microTorrent or μTorrent. Now uTorrent Plus is being developed which is a paid version of uTorrent.
